Introductory Computer Series

The following classes build your skills and understanding of computers and applications.  When taken in order, the student can expect to gain a comprehensive overview of computers and how to use popular applications.

Computer Fundamentals for Newer Users

This class is designed as in introduction to computers for beginners.  If computers are confusing or intimidating, this class is for you.  We will cover the basics:  Turning your computer on and off properly, using the keyboard and mouse through basic skill building exercises, and simple computer games. We will cover basic document creation using a word processor, sending and receiving e-mail using web based e-mail applications like Hotmail, and using a web browser to search the Internet for information, shopping, and entertainment.   2 sessions, 3 hours per session. Exploring Windows XP

This is the second class in the series, and is a good starting point if you are already comfortable with computers, but want to learn how to improve your skills.  This class is designed to help the student become proficient with the Windows XP operating system, with some additional focus on word processing, e-mail, and the Internet.  We will explore the hidden applications in Windows XP, and learn how to use the Control Panel to customize and personalize the appearance and functionality of our computer.  We will also work with Windows Explorer, a useful Windows utility for finding, storing, and organizing your documents, pictures, and computer files.  We will also learn how to download software and other content from the Internet, and how to save files and pictures to floppy disk, USB key drives, and CDs.  2 sessions, 3 hours per session.  Instructor Bob Weiss.

Everything You Want to Know is on the Internet

The Internet is a fascinating resource.  It is at once the world’s great library, shopping mall, and communications network.  Anything you can imagine can be found on the internet.  In this intermediate level class, students will expand their skills using a web browser to use the Internet for research purposes, and how to print, download, and store information.  Students will enjoy a guided tour of the best Internet sites, and receive a CD that will install dozens of the best sites into your Favorites for later review.  Students should be computer comfortable, or have taken a beginner computer course.  1 session, 3 hours per session. Effective E-Mail Techniques

This e-mail class will look at both web based e-mail services like AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, or G-Mail, and software based e-mail programs like Outlook Express and Microsoft Oultook.  We will cover basic sending and receiving attachments, changing fonts, creating stationery, and creating e-mail folders for storing and organizing your e-mail.  Students will be able to sign up for a free e-mail service, if they don’t already have an e-mail account.  We also will discuss basic e-mail protections from spam, viruses, and fraud or identity theft.  1 session, 3 hours per session. Organizing Computer Files with Windows Explorer

This class with explore tech students how to store, find, and organize documents, pictures and other files on your computer.  We will learn about Windows Explorer, a useful Windows utility for computer file management.  Students will learn how to navigate and explore their hard drive, and how to create folders to effectively organize and store information.  We will discuss Windows file naming conventions, and how to use drag and drop and cut, copy, and paste to move files around, and how to save files and pictures to floppy disk, USB key drives, and CDs.  1 session, 3 hours per session.  Instructor Bob Weiss.
